History of shockwave​

1950s

Systematic research on shock waves began during
World War II after the discovery that soldiers' lungs were indirectly damaged
after underwater explosions without external shock.

1980s

Based on collaboration between various experiments and clinical trials, the idea of breaking kidney stones using extracorporeal shock waves emerged, and in the 1980s, extracorporeal shock wave fragmentation became established as a treatment method.

1993

As bone formation was observed in patients who underwent stone crushing surgery, research was conducted on the effects of shock waves on the musculoskeletal system, and it was observed that joint pain was alleviated with extracorporeal shock wave treatment. Since then, as applications for extracorporeal shock wave therapy have developed, the usefulness of extracorporeal shock wave therapy for calcific tendinitis was reported for the first time in 1993.

1997

The European Society of Shockwave Therapy was established in 1997, with a 60-80% treatment success rate for other types of tendonosis such as plantar fasciitis and lateral epicondylitis.

1999

As doctors from many countries joined, it developed into an international society called the International Society of Shock Wave Therapy in 1999, and as basic clinical knowledge about shock waves was shared, the indications for musculoskeletal treatment in the orthopedic field gradually expanded.
